October
Fox Hunt: The Harris team, Keith/Ann, was
the fox and four hunters/teams showed to track down the fox.
The four hunters were Mike, KF9NP, Ray, KB9LGS, Mike King,
KC9JIG, and Larry, WA9FFZ. A good signal was received
and bearings indicated almost due west. The shortest
route was to drive to the intersection of 37, 450 and 158.
Taking bearings there was crucial. A choice had to be
made whether to take 450 or 158. Highway 158 was the
right choice, following it almost to Silverville. The
fox was hidden at a Baptist Church on a side road just before
reaching Silverville. Ray was the first to arrive just
45 minutes into the hunt followed five minutes later by Larry
and then the two Mikes came in beyond one hour. Larry
brought home the victory having driven only 12.7 miles with
Ray close behind logging 13.2 miles. Mike, KF9NP, had
18.0 miles and Mike, KC9JIG, had 18.6 miles. The race
for the top gun fox hunt award for 2006 is heating up with a
three way tie for first at three victories a piece for Mike,
KF9NP, Keith/Ann, N9KH/K9NOT and Larry, WA9FFZ. The
November hunt will be the third Saturday, November 18th.
The starting time will be announced later. Larry,
WA9FFZ, will be the fox.
Hamfest:
This year’s hamfest was a big success with beautiful weather
and a host of willing workers. Hamfest chairman, Tim
Wray, KB9SNL, Marcie Davis, KC9IAI, Chili Supper chairperson,
Rick Davis, WD8JJA, Gate chairman, Mike Wright, KF9NP, Testing
chairman, and Valerie, Bingo chairperson are to be commended
in their efforts. Several people passed their license
exams on Sunday. A questionnaire was filled out by many
during the hamfest with some interesting results which will be
considered when planning next year’s hamfest. The
number attending was quoted at 653.
Special
Events Station: During the Persimmon
Festival the club once again operated the special events
station, K9P. Special thanks go to Hal, W8AIR, and Tim
Miller, K9US for overseeing this effort. Letters of
thank you are being prepared for Helix Technologies, Inc. for
allowing the use of wireless broadband and hooking it up, and
for Kirk & Associates Insurance Services for allowing
access to their building and permitting antennas to be
attached to their building. Several visitors during the
week indicated an interest in studying and obtaining their
amateur radio license.
RACES:
Brendan McCormick, KE9GVP, is attempting to revitalize RACES.
They meet the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 PM, at the
Fire Station.
