March
Fox Hunt: Thanks are due to Mike, KF9NP, for
sending the final results of the fox hunt to your secretary.
Eight hunters in five vehicles showed to track down
Tim Wray
, KB9SNL, the fox who was hidden at the
Tunnelton
Cemetery
. Ray Robison,
K9ZRL, got his feet wet (not literally) by accompanying Mike
Wright on his first outing and enjoyed the experience.
He picked the right hunter to go with as Mike, KF9NP,
brought home the victory logging only 14.4 miles.
Ray Stevens, KB9LGS, claimed second with 17.8 miles and
Mike Boles, KC9FHX, took third with 18.6 miles.
Mike B. was heard to say if he hadn’t made a wrong
turn he would have finished much better.
All fox hunters are plagued with those “wrong”
turns. Keith and
Larry were hampered by bad bearings to start with and chose
south of the river, a choice that assured them not to find the
fox in time. South
of the river numerous roads were posted with high water signs
and the fox signal was coming from across an impassable
expanse of muddy water. Mike,
KF9NP, remarked that his initial bearing was straight down the
river, forcing him to make the difficult choice of going
either north or south of the river.
He will be the fox in April, starting time to be
announced later.
March
Forum: Mike, KF9NP, lined up a very
interesting forum at the conclusion of the HHHC March meeting.
It was about PSK31 Digital Communications, the
presenter being Dave Bartlett, N9BUB.
Dave brought a laptop computer with a dedicated
projector, an interface and an HF rig.
He gave attendees a detailed handout which explained
all facets of this mode of communications from history to
operation. His
presentation setup showed actual signals being received, as
displayed via his projector.
Our thanks to President Mike for
bringing in a fascinating forum.
Miscellaneous
Subjects:
Mike, KF9NP, reported on a successful work Saturday at
the club site. There
were six or seven people who showed for that effort.
The first Saturday of each month will be designated as
a work day starting around
9 A.M.
Keith,
N9KH, plugged the Indiana
Radio Club
Council which has a meeting four times a year, the next one
being April 1,
2-4 P.M.
at WISH, Channel 8 in
Indianapolis
. Our club is a
member and several HHHC club members are hoping to attend that
meeting. Keith
mentioned in connection with that, the late Frank Carroll,
W9QYQ, was Indiana Ham of the Year in 1959.
Secretary
apologies and notes:
I’m sorry to get the newsletter out so late this
month. At the
risk of sounding like a stuck record, other duties caused me
to be late and give a brief newsletter.
I’ll try to do better next month.
