January Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. on January 6, 2004. The December 2, 2003 meeting minutes were read and discussed. It was determined that the minutes should read hard-line instead of coax in regards to the 440 repeater. The minutes were approved as amended.
Treasurer's notes were read and approved.

Old Business

  • A membership application was received last month for Tim Wray, KB9SNL, he was voted in as a new member.

  • 440 Repeater Update: Tim Miller stated that the person on e-Bay had a 220-foot spool of 7/8 hard-line at $1 per foot. Shipping will be $80. Other supplies needed are a connector, which will cost approximately $10, and two grounding kits (Tim found two new ones in boxes for $6). Hal Mandery said he might have some connectors to donate.

  • 31 Repeater Update: It is still sitting in back room, and will be moved to the Bedford Fire Department, 1900 H St, pending better weather. The new antenna is a Diamond Dual Bander X500, dual gain with plenty of 1/2 inch heliax, and looks almost new, according to Miller.

  • 73 Repeater Update: The Club received a letter from the Indiana Repeater Council. They are trying to get aerial photographs of all the antenna towers. We received photographs, but the club determined that the antenna tower was not in the photograph.

  • By-Law committee Update: A copy of the amended by-laws will be sent out in the January newsletter. A special meeting will be held in February to discuss it.

New Business

  • Hamfest: The need for a specific date for the 2004 Hamfest was discussed. The first weekend in October is Oct. 2-3. President Keith Harris will determine if the Persimmon Festival is on the same weekend. Keith explained about Lawrence County 4-H Fairgrounds rental, and discussion followed about problems at the 2003 Hamfest. Ron Arbuckle made a motion to authorize Keith to spend more than the 2003 rental fee within reason. The motion was passed. Keith and other members plan to attend the Feb. 2, 2004 Fair Board meeting to discuss the rental.

  • Safe Deposit Box: The only thing currently in the box is a plat of the property. Discussion followed about buying a small safe to hold important documents, including a newly signed copy of the by-laws. The current box is at Bank One, and a motion was passed to check on a new safe deposit box at Jackson County Bank. A key to the other box is missing, and an attempt to recover it will be made.

  • Website: Tim Wray has a prototype of the website completed. It was available for viewing following the meeting.

  • Repeater controller: Equipment was installed tonight so the repeater can be programmed from outside the clubhouse. Manuals for it are available.

  • A membership application was received from Rick Davis, WD8JJA. He is an amateur-extra who lives in Springville. His application will be voted on at the February meeting.

  • Door prize: Christian Schuler won the door prize, which was a Timex alarm clock radio.

The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.

December Foxhunt

(Photo: Tim Wray, KB9SNL)

Six hunters turned out to try and find a sly fox named Mike at the Dec. 20. foxhunt. However, only three were successful.

Hunters included:

  • WA9FFZ, Larry Hammersley

  • N9KH, Keith Harris

  • KB9SNL, Tim Wray, with his father and guest, Tony Wray

  • KB1AHR, Ben Hofmann, and wife, Karen

  • KB9SNP, Brandon Wires, and KB9WRX, Diana Wires

  • KB9SNO, Landon Key

The hunt eerily began as Mike Wright, KF9NP, said; "There is only parking for one vehicle by the box, call on the 73 and write down your call and mileage."

The hunt concluded with only 3 hunters making it to the fox, who was hidden on Sowders Land near Leesville.

The box was hidden in a ditch near a big creek, according to Wray, and Wright was sitting on private property.

On the way down a hill at the finish, Key's vehicle slid down the hill and into a tree (see attached photo)

"It's really curvy and it was covered in ice, and he slowed down too hard and bounced off a little tree but kept going," Wray concluded.

Even with his vehicle misfortune, Key won the hunt with 19.3 miles, Harris finished a close second with 21 miles, and Wray had 28.

The next foxhunt will be Saturday, January 17 at 3:30 p.m. The start point is Calvary Lutheran Church.
